The DaCosta-Hall Summer School program has served thousands of Montreal students for over three decades. It has done so with the support of parents, and certified teachers working in the Montreal school systems. It has had a long working relationship with the EMSB/PSBGM, Dawson College , and key Black community based organizations such as the Black Studies Center, The Black Theatre Workshop, and the BCCQ. The program grew out of the mission of the QBBE to achieve equal educational opportunity for Blacks and other minorities and in general its commitment to the improvement of the quality of education to youths in the Montral school system . The early success of the program and the central role it has played in the the QBBE's mission and mandate are believed to have been major contributing factors in the development of the multicultutal education policies of the EMSB. Its programming has advanced from an early primary emphasis on remediation to the creation of enrichment and transition programs that not only improve academic and skill deficiencies, but create a greater sense of community in our youths; and strengthen the attachment between the child, the parent and the school. Thus, from these earlier initiatives , new programs have evolved that aim to increase the capacity in our youth for sustainable social and economic development. Two such programs that have been motivated by the DaCosta-Hall Summer programming initiatives are the Family Program for positive parenting and a Summer Business school for youth sponsored by QBBE in collaboration with ICED, JMSB.
